My original reply went to John only, sorry.
Ffmpeg claims to be able to convert from mp4 to JPEG, though I have not used 
this feature.  You may want to check out the latest version from CVS, as the 
most recent released version is getting old.  The next rev (0.4.9) should be 
released "soon".
Go to: http://sourceforge.net/projects/ffmpeg/
You will need a fairly recent version of gcc and make or gmake.
