[Mp4-tech] JPEG terms

Hi all,
Can anyone give me the information about terms in JPEG standard like data 
unit,MCU,scan,component,stride,block and the relation between them for all 
the formats namely sequential,progressive,lossless,hierarchical and for all 
the image formats e.g 4:2:0,4:2:2,4:2:2,4:4:4.
If these terms hold good in other image formats lke tiff,png,gif,etc.
Please point to some papers or material really good in understanding the 
relation between the above terms for the purpose of implementing encoder and 
decoder.
