It's also here: http://www.vialicensing.com/news/pr_pr_0304_CallforMPEG7Patents.HTML Kind Regards, Rob Call for Essential Patents Reading on the MPEG-7 Standard Process will lead to joint licensing of patents to enable products and services utilizing MPEG-7 technologies San Francisco, April 23, 2003-Via Licensing Corporation is pleased to issue the following call for essential patents reading on the MPEG-7 standard. MPEG-7 is a specification for describing multimedia content in order to increase the usability and accessibility of such content. Standardized in September 2001 as ISO/IEC 15938, MPEG-7 is designed to complement other MPEG standards, such as MPEG-2 and MPEG-4, which specify how audio and visual content can be represented and manipulated in digital form. MPEG-7 is not a next-generation replacement for the audio/visual coding technologies specified by MPEG, but is an entirely different set of tools that are designed to make digital media easier identify, catalog, index, archive, and retrieve. A copy of the MPEG-7 specification is available for purchase from the ISO online store at www.iso.org/iso/en/prods-services/ISOstore/store.html (search for "15938"). An overview of MPEG-7 can be viewed at mpeg.telecomitalialab.com/standards/mpeg-7/mpeg-7.htm. The goal of this call for patents is to identify the owners of patents that are necessary for the practice of the MPEG-7. Essential patents are understood to be issued patents or patent applications that have one or more claims that would necessarily be infringed by the implementation or use of the MPEG-7 standard. Any entity that believes it has granted patents or patent applications that are essential to the normative portions of the MPEG-7 standard as specified in ISO/IEC 15938, and wishing to participate in a group consisting of essential patent holders that will convene to discuss the commercialization terms for MPEG-7 patents, is invited to contact Via Licensing Corporation in order to receive information about how to submit patents to this process. Please request such information by sending an e-mail message to submissions@vialicensing.com, in which you specify your interest in making a submission for consideration of essentiality to the MPEG-7 specification.
