Outside the U.S., two-way video handsets have been offered in Japan on DoCoMo's FOMA service since 2001, and Europe's "3" network since 2003, owned by Hutchinson in Hong Kong. However, mobile video faces technical, business, and user challenges to adoption. Network bandwidth usage, content partnerships, and user appeal are issues mobile video will have to overcome to succeed. Although many operators have experimented with proprietary formats from Real Networks and Microsoft, the international MPEG-4 standard is emerging as the most popular format for mobile video. This session presents an opportunity to learn from two pioneers in MPEG-4 technology, PacketVideo and Mindego. There will be demonstrations of PacketVideo's technology on mobile handsets and example applications from Mindego. Questions to be addressed include: ? Just what is MPEG-4? ? How do open standards such as MPEG-4 compare with proprietary systems? ? Who's using MPEG-4 today? ? What does the future hold for mobile video and animation?
