[M4IF Technotes] Real-time codec & player help

Hi - 
I was wondering if any one could point me to a real-time MPEG-4 (preferably systems, preferably with source code) codec that will hook into a player.
As I receive encoded data through a stack implemented in java - I would like to send it through a Data/FileOutputStream to a client decoder that will play out and decode the bytes as they are received. 
Any help or directions are greatly appreciated from an extremely frustrated post-grad researcher.
