[M4IF Technotes] S/W encoding(DSP) VS. H/W ASIC encoding

hi,
In order to implement the MPEG-4 simple visual profile, not for mobile system,  what are the main evaluation points to decide which is better between S/W encoding based on DSP and H/W ASIC encoding?
The codec will be embedded into the digital survaillence system as an video commpression methods.
As far as I know there are some MPEG-4 ASIC codec not for mobile solution.
Which method do you recommend?   Why?
