M4IF's homepage temporarily sports a separate section with MPEG-4 / NAB news . We will have an online show guide shortly; more news will follow on this list. Leonardo Chiariglione, MPEG's Convenor, will open NAB's Broadcast Engineering Conference Sunday morning. Together with SMPTE , Monday afternoon, M4IF organizes MPEG - Enabling Broadcast and Media Convergence from 13:00-17:00 on Monday Sept. 7th, as a part of the Broadcast Engineering Conference. Monday evening, M4IF and IBM co-sponsor the Multimedia World Reception. Meantime, we are happy to welcome VBrick Systems as its newest member, and our website is undergoing minor upgrades. We're adding a third column that will hold a variety of handy links. Added today was the new White Paper on High Efficiency AAC, the most efficient audio codec in existence. More such material will be posted shortly. Check it out! On to the news. I never did the statistics, but again there is more and more news. (You can do the stats yourself using our archive , but note that we are getting much more selective these days in listing news items). The pattern continues: more CE devices supporting MPEG-4, more wireless devices and services, more support in chips and programmable hardware. MPEG's press release once again highlights the news that the Advanced Video Coding standard - a.k.a. H.264 - is now final and ready for implementation. Expect some demos at NAB. ISMA 's recent news that the group is finalizing it's encryption spec is significant: it's another step towards interoperable DRM for MPEG-4. This will make the standard more attractive for publishers of valuable content. More steps to interoperable Digital Rights Management are being taken in MPEG-21. If you are going to NAB, be sure to come see us at Booth SL 2455, where M4IF shares a booth with its members Ahead Software, Prodys and Fraunhofer, the last of which also has some MPEG-7 technology on display! M4IF still has its NAB2003 pages up and running, and will shortly publish the presentations for the MPEG - Enabling Broadcast and Media Convergence session on Monday September 7th. NAB was markedly different than last year's show, when most people still wanted to know what MPEG-4 was. This year, people were knowledgeable and had good questions, many about AVC, many also about licensing. It was good to see interest from several parties in joining M4IF. There were some promising demos for the recently finalized AVC | H.264 video coding standard, including real-time encoding and decoding. An interesting announcement came from BBC and Envivio. BBC will be one if the first companies to go beyond Audio and Video, and use MPEG-4's interactive power. I've seen a demo - it looks very attractive and professional. See first link below. The week after BBC and Envivio announced a trial with MPEG-4 Systems technology, two more independent MPEG-4 Systems tool sets were released: freely downloadable "Osmo4" by ENST from Paris, and "TVM4" by TVIA which also has a freely downloadable player. The licensing situation in MPEG-4 Visual lingers on as something to write about, witness be two articles referenced below. Via Licensing published the terms for MPEG-4 Audio - not just AAC, but also other Profiles. Good news, albeit a tad late. A day later, they announced a Call for essential patents for the MPEG-7 standard. Let's hope that the lessons from MPEG-4 will lead to faster availability of licenses to essential MPEG-7 patents. In the News section, a couple of product reviews and some speculation. Broadcast Engineering published a special section on MPEG-4 for NAB; now also available online. Our NAB2003 Archive is still being updated with articles and interviews. M4IF will hold its next (annual) membership meeting on 26 and 27 June in Montreal. Contact Paul Ritchie (see CC) if you are interested in joining M4IF and want to sample this meeting. A reminder that an archive of these digests can be found online on M4IF's website.
