From rob.koenen m4if.org Tue Feb 4 11:51:16 2003 From: rob.koenen m4if.org (Rob Koenen) Date: Wed Jul 23 13:58:43 2003 Subject: [M4IF News] Systems License Released Message-ID: <3C124172E7FDD511B510000347426D59016BEEE9@exchange.epr.com> News Readers, It has just been brought to my attention that the MPEG-4 Systems license has been released. The release of this license is a further step towards realizing the full innovative potential of MPEG4, as MPEG-4's interactive features, its Scene Description language (BIFS), its Object Descriptor framework and the MP4 file format are all specified in MPEG-4 Systems. I have yet to see the license itself, but given the terms as they were released last year, I expect it to be less controversial than the Visual license. (NB: MPEG is now in the process of reorganizing the Systems spec into several parts; I do not know if this will impact the license going forward.) MPEG-4 is definitely gaining more and more attention, with the almost daily releases of new products now. This week, Pace Soft Silicon was the 36th company to sign up for M4IF's interop tests. These tests are now going into the 5th round. M4IF's resources pages have had a minor overhaul, mostly behind the scenes--they are now fully database-driven and will be more up-to-date going forward. There is now a special page on papers, tutorials, books, publications, webcasts, etc. M4IF is gearing up for NAB 2003. Together with SMPTE we are organizing an exciting special session on emerging MPEG technology. Tentative details are here and more will follow soon. Some of the interesting links for last week go below. I'll give them without too much comment this week, to not delay the digest even further.
