Hello,
To add to the confusion on who has the first h264 live encoder, we have
announced and released h264 Main profile, level 3 systems at IBC last
year. Please see our September 03 releases at:
http://www.envivio.com/news/index.html
These systems have been shipping and deployed since then in many
broadcast applications. None of them have been publicly announced, as
some customers prefer to keep confidentiality.
Envivio has available today not only live encoders, but also offline
encoders for VOD, servers for VOD, professional playout appliances, and
PC players as well.
I think it is important to note as well that, as far as I am aware,
video conferencing uses baseline profile. Our broadcast quality encoder
and decoders use main profile level 3.
And yes Rob, we will add our press releases to the M4IF web site in the
future!
Regards,
Julien Signes
President

Gary,
Thanks for your comments. I talked to Harmonic and they really see this
as an AVC deployment, even though this may arguably be unclear from
their release.
I know about H.264 being introduced in the videoconferencing space - but
I hadn't come across any press releases myself yet. Credit where credit
is due though:

If anyone know any other products or news relevant to MPEGIF's News
Digest, then please let me know or register the news or your press
release yourself: http://www.m4if.org/news/newsregister.php so that it
will be listed on teh MPEGIF home page and in the weekly digest.
Best Regards,
Rob
ps: aggressive spam filters have caused many you to get multiple copies
of the (filtered) Digest again, we have put on emergency moderation and
will now remove the email addresses causing this.

Regarding the comment that Harmonic may be the first commercial AVC
deployment: I notice that the referenced Harmonic's press release still
seems to refer to AVC capabilities primarily in the future tense.
However, in any case, this is not the first. The industry that is really
deploying AVC first is the videoconferencing community. Polycom and
Tandberg (the #1 and #2 companies in that world) have both been claiming
to be shipping it for six months or more. (However, I have not yet
heard of their shipping products achieving interoperability with each
other's products, so some real work remains to be done in that area.)
All the best,
-Gary
