That's a good way of doing it.
ANother way is obtaining as many decoders as possible
(Real + plug-in, QuitckTime, dicas (www.dicas.de), SimgaDesigns
(see www.m4if.org under hot news)
The best way, forgive the plug, is to join M4IF and to take part
in the interoperability tests.
That way you will not only be able to test your stuff yourself, you
will also have other people work with your bitstreams and provide
you with feedback.
