MPEG-4 News Readers,

M4IF is busy gearing up for NAB 2003. M4IF's homepage temporarily sports a separate section with MPEG-4 / NAB news. We will have an online show guide shortly; more news will follow on this list. Leonardo Chiariglione, MPEG's Convenor, will open NAB's Broadcast Engineering Conference Sunday morning. Together with SMPTE, Monday afternoon, M4IF organizes MPEG - Enabling Broadcast and Media Convergence from 13:00-17:00 on Monday Sept. 7th, as a part of the Broadcast Engineering Conference. Monday evening, M4IF and IBM co-sponsor the Multimedia World Reception.

Meantime, we are happy to welcome VBrick Systems as its newest member, and our website is undergoing minor upgrades. We're adding a third column that will hold a variety of handy links. Added today was the new White Paper on High Efficiency AAC, the most efficient audio codec in existence. More such material will be posted shortly. Check it out!

On to the news. I never did the statistics, but again there is more and more news. (You can do the stats yourself using our archive, but note that we are getting much more selective these days in listing news items). The pattern continues: more CE devices supporting MPEG-4, more wireless devices and services, more support in chips and programmable hardware. MPEG's press release once again highlights the news that the Advanced Video Coding standard - a.k.a. H.264 - is now final and ready for implementation. Expect some demos at NAB.

ISMA's recent news that the group is finalizing it's encryption spec is significant: it's another step towards interoperable DRM for MPEG-4. This will make the standard more attractive for publishers of valuable content. More steps to interoperable Digital Rights Management are being taken in MPEG-21.

If you are going to NAB, be sure to come see us at Booth SL 2455, where M4IF shares a booth with its members Ahead Software, Prodys and Fraunhofer, the last of which also has some MPEG-7 technology on display!
