INTRODUCTION

The level of change facing the television/video industry today can be daunting. For many years, competition for subscribers revolved around content, while the network architecture remained relatively stable. More recently, Video on Demand, High Definition, Start Over and other time shifted applications have been widely deployed. This has now been joined by the “TV Everywhere” concept, and 3D is today trying to leap from the theatre into the living room. Every year there is something new to contemplate and for which to potentially plan. Over the years, the MPEG Industry Forum has worked aggressively to bring clarity to the industry’s vision of the future and to advocate for the adoption of standards that accelerate that clarity. This year at NAB this task has become more important than ever as new technologies create new opportunities to make (or lose) money. The 2010 MasterClass at NAB is focused around two areas that will bring technologists and leading executives from operators and content owners around the world to discuss these new opportunities and to share their experience and perspectives.

Are the consumer electronics companies simply trying to engineer a new replacement cycle as they propose a number of alternatives to bring 3D to the living room or is 3D really following in the footsteps of HD and Surround Sound to transition naturally from the big screen to smaller screens at home? What do new formats such as 3D and Ultra High Definition mean in a world in which a lot of content, if not most, is either SD or upconverted SD and true HD is not yet universal? This is despite the fact that virtually every new television set sold is 1080p capable This session examines the role of standards in the creation, delivery and consumption of HD, Ultra High Definition and especially 3D and how, and if, these will create dramatic differences in viewing experiences and habits.

Despite all the promise of new technology, the actual picture quality enjoyed by the viewer rarely gets close to the quality of the video at the time of its creation. In addition, the excellent sound quality studios create so often gets blasted by interstitial advertising, or lip synch is lost along the transmission chain resulting in an experience that is hardly tolerable. How do we, as an industry, move quality standards forward and how is quality going to be measured so that corrective actions can be automatically implemented? How do 3D, HD and UHD raise the bar in the measurement of quality? This session addresses the evolving role of standards for the technology of measuring what is termed “Quality of Experience” (QoE) and how the adoption of these standards can dramatically increase viewing satisfaction.

11:50 – 12:00 p.m. Summation & iPod Drawing

Sebastian Moeritz - President, MPEGIF/CEO dicas
David Price - Vice President, MPEGIF/Vice President, Harmonic Inc.
